На индивидуальном примере М. можно хорошо наблюдать процесс разрыва между «средними классами» (middle class) и дворянством: подобно первым М. был проникнут тогда лишь смутным недовольством, к-рое выражалось только спорадически. М. в то время — либеральный англиканец, слабо заинтересованный в религиозных и политических спорах. Обстановка, окружавшая его в Гортоне, носила двойственный характер: с одной стороны — самые дружеские отношения со знатными аристократами-соседями (в их поместьях разыгрывались в первый раз «маски» М.), с другой — знакомство с итальянскими эмигрантами, бежавшими от деспотизма папы и многочисленных князьков, дружба с учеными пуританами, близкими ему по своим научным интересам. В связи с этим первый период его творчества проникнут двумя противоположными тенденциями. Не преодолев еще дворянской культуры (особенно традиций дворянской лит-ры елизаветинской эпохи), он восхвалял то прелесть монастырской жизни то веселые развлечения, сменяющиеся созерцанием и размышлением. Но вместе с тем здесь звучали и другие мотивы: дифирамб свободе («The sweet nymph Liberty»), идеалу свободного человека, владеющего...
